Cameroon’s 91-year-old President Paul Biya has returned to the country following weeks of speculation about his health and even rumors of his death. On October 21, 2024, Biya landed in Yaoundé, the capital, where he was seen in public, dispelling the death rumors that had circulated during his absence. His return was broadcast on national television, with Biya appearing alongside his wife, Chantal Biya.
The rumors about his health surfaced after he had been away from the public eye for several weeks, fueling concerns, especially as Cameroon’s government had previously banned media discussions regarding his condition. Despite his prolonged absence, officials maintained that Biya was in good health and dismissed the death rumors as unfounded.
Biya has been in power since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His latest public appearance comes as his current term is set to end in 2025, with questions looming about whether he will run for another term
