Enugu State Government Acquires CNG Buses to Modernize Public Transportation The Enugu State Government has acquired a new fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in a strategic move to improve the state’s public transportation system and promote environmentally friendly alternatives. According to official statements, the initiative is part of Governor Peter Mbah’s broader plan to modernize infrastructure, ease urban mobility, and reduce the environmental impact of fossil fuels in the transportation sector. In preparation for the rollout, the government is constructing a major CNG mother station at Ugwu Onyeama, designed to serve as a refueling hub for the new buses and potentially cater to the entire South East region. However, the development has sparked concerns among local commercial transport operators, particularly tricycle (keke) and mini-bus drivers, who fear the initiative may lead to a ban on their operations and result in job losses. In response, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Mainstream Media, Mr. Dan Nwomeh, dismissed the rumors of a ban, stating that the state government has no immediate plans to prohibit tricycles or mini-buses. He clarified that the CNG buses are intended to complement, not replace, existing transportation modes. The state government has assured the public that the implementation of the CNG bus project will be inclusive and sensitive to the needs of current transport operators.
