
Chief Mrs. Grace Atinuke Oyelude, born on November 16, 1931, in Sabon Gari, Kano, holds the historic title of the first Miss Nigeria, winning the maiden beauty pageant in 1957. Her victory was unique, as her brother entered her into the competition without her knowledge. At the time, she competed against over 200 participants and won a cash prize of 200 pounds and a two-week trip to London.
Following her win, Oyelude pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She traveled to England, where she studied nursing at the School of Nursing in Ashford, Kent, and later specialized in midwifery and hospital administration. Upon returning to Nigeria, she contributed significantly to healthcare, serving in roles such as Senior Nursing Sister and Director of Nursing Services at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. During the Nigerian Civil War, she led a medical team in Makurdi General Hospital to care for war casualties.
Oyelude’s legacy extends beyond her professional accomplishments. She has inspired generations of Nigerian women to aspire for greatness and has been celebrated for her contributions to nursing, women’s empowerment, and culture. At 93 years old, she remains an iconic figure in Nigerian history, recognized for her resilience, achievements, and dedication to service.
