China has ramped up military pressure on Taiwan with large-scale drills that began on October 14, 2024. Dubbed “Operation Joint Sword 24B,” the exercises include naval and air force maneuvers around Taiwan, simulating attacks on both maritime and land targets. These drills are a response to recent comments from Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, who reiterated Taiwan’s independence during the island’s National Day celebrations, provoking a sharp reaction from Beijing.
China’s government stated the drills aim to test its ability to “seize power” and punish separatist forces. Taiwan, in response, condemned the exercises, accusing China of threatening regional peace. The U.S. and international allies have called for restraint, urging both sides to avoid further escalation as tensions continue to rise across the Taiwan Strait.
