The price of cooking gas in Nigeria has surged to N1,500 per kilogram, with some regions seeing even higher prices. This sharp increase is being felt nationwide, particularly in Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja, where a 12.5kg cylinder now costs over N17,000. The price hike is attributed to a combination of supply shortages, high global gas prices, and Nigeria’s dependence on imports, which makes the market vulnerable to international fluctuations.
As a result, many households are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living, and some may resort to alternatives like firewood, reversing progress made in clean energy usage.
