Crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun, founder of the Tron blockchain, recently ate a banana artwork he purchased for $6.2 million during a press event at The Peninsula hotel in Hong Kong. The artwork, titled Comedian, was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and consists of a banana duct-taped to a wall. Sun bought it at a Sotheby’s auction and later ate the banana, turning the act into a performance piece. He likened the artwork to cryptocurrency, emphasizing its conceptual value rather than the physical object itself.
Interestingly, the $6.2 million price tag did not include the actual banana but a certificate of authenticity and assembly instructions. The original fruit vendor who sold the banana expressed shock at its transformation into an art piece. Sun also announced plans to buy 100,000 bananas from this vendor to distribute for free globally, further integrating philanthropy into his artistic gesture.
