
A catastrophic fuel tanker explosion in Majiya town, located in Jigawa State, has left the nation in shock as the death toll surpasses 170. The disaster unfolded late Tuesday night when a fuel tanker, attempting to avoid another vehicle, overturned and spilled its contents. This attracted a large crowd of people eager to collect the leaking petrol despite warnings from authorities. Unfortunately, the tanker exploded shortly afterward, leaving the crowd in flames.
Authorities on the scene reported that the number of injured exceeds 100, with many suffering severe burns. Victims have been transported to hospitals across the region, including Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Jahun General Hospital, and others in nearby states. Medical facilities are struggling to cope with the surge in burn victims and are appealing for urgent assistance.
In response to the tragedy, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced a donation of ₦100 million to assist survivors and the families of the deceased. This gesture of solidarity has been warmly received, as many families face immense emotional and financial hardship. Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa also expressed his sorrow over the incident, describing it as one of the most tragic events in the state’s history.
