Recent protests under the #EndBadGovernance movement in Nigeria have sparked controversy and criticism over the government’s response, particularly the detention of minors. Over 70 protesters, including at least 29 minors, have been detained on charges such as terrorism and treason following their participation in rallies against governance issues. The detention of these young protesters has faced backlash both domestically and internationally. Critics argue that these charges are extreme, and some, including activists like Oby Ezekwesili, have called on President Bola Tinubu to address public grievances directly instead of using punitive measures.
Ezekwesili, a former education minister and prominent advocate for good governance, emphasized that no leader can triumph over a determined populace, urging the government to adopt a more conciliatory approach and listen to citizens’ demands rather than suppressing them. This perspective is echoed by activists and public figures who argue that peaceful protest is a constitutional right and that the government’s current approach could worsen public discontent.
