The European Union has called on China to exercise restraint and act responsibly in its response to the sweeping tariffs recently imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on a range of Chinese goods.
In a statement released on Saturday, the EU stressed the importance of avoiding an escalation in global trade tensions, urging Beijing to uphold the principles of fair trade and international cooperation.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and encourage China to respond in a manner that is proportionate, measured, and in line with its commitments under the World Trade Organization (WTO),” the EU Commission said.
The appeal comes amid growing global concern that the U.S.-China tariff war could spark broader economic instability. The EU has also been affected by the new tariffs, prompting Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the UK to remark earlier this week that the measures would “clearly have an economic impact” but that his government would respond with “cool and calm heads.”
Trade analysts warn that retaliatory actions by China could further complicate diplomatic efforts and disrupt global supply chains.
The EU reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and dialogue, calling on all parties involved to “prioritize constructive engagement over confrontation.”
