Students of the Federal College of Education (Technical) (FCET) in Akoka, Lagos, are challenging a N10,000 fine imposed by the administration following a recent violent protest on campus. The incident reportedly occurred after students joined staff members in a demonstration that escalated, causing property damage and attracting police intervention. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, noted that 32 people were arrested following the protest, during which staff and students clashed with a Ministry of Education team attempting to mediate a dispute involving the college’s provost and ongoing administrative issues. Reports indicate that the protesters blocked entrances and exits, prompting law enforcement to intervene to restore order.
The imposed fine has sparked significant opposition among students, who argue that the blanket penalty is unjust, especially for those uninvolved in the protest. Student leaders have appealed to the Ministry of Education to address the grievances behind the unrest, emphasizing that a productive dialogue could prevent future conflicts on campus.
