The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
The decision, aimed at recognizing General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development, was announced as part of efforts to celebrate national icons. Gowon, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State during the Civil War (1967–1970), has been widely acknowledged for his leadership in preserving the country’s unity and his enduring contributions to public service.
The institution will now be called General Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja. According to the Federal Government, the renaming reflects a commitment to preserving Nigeria’s history and honoring leaders who have played pivotal roles in shaping the nation.
Details of the renaming ceremony are expected to be released by the Ministry of Education in the coming days.
