Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, has had his assets frozen and is currently detained in Finland on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. Ekpa, along with four others, was arrested by Finnish authorities following allegations of using social media to promote violent separatist activities in Nigeria’s Southeast region. The group is also under investigation for financing terrorism. Finnish law prohibits bail in such cases, meaning Ekpa will remain in custody until his trial in May 2025.
He has been placed in Kylmäkoski Prison, which is known for housing high-risk offenders and is regarded as one of Finland’s most secure facilities. His activities have drawn international attention, with calls for his extradition to Nigeria. However, no bilateral extradition agreement exists between the two countries, complicating the matter.
