France has summoned the Israeli ambassador in response to a series of attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, specifically targeting positions held by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The French Foreign Ministry strongly condemned these actions, calling them deliberate violations of international law and demanding that they stop immediately. The incidents, which injured two peacekeepers, occurred at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, near the Israeli-Lebanese border.
The French government has emphasized the need for Israel to clarify the situation and has reminded all parties involved in the conflict of their responsibility to protect UN peacekeepers. Italy, whose military also contributes significantly to UNIFIL, echoed similar concerns, condemning the attacks as intolerable.
These hostilities are part of a larger context of escalating violence in the region, with Israel conducting air and ground operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah, which has further strained relations between Israeli forces and UNIFIL.
