In a recent interview, de Jong admitted that there were moments when he questioned when the ordeal would finally end.
“Sometimes I thought: when is this going to end?” de Jong said, acknowledging the mental strain that came with the prolonged uncertainty of his recovery. Despite remaining hopeful that he would return to football, the Dutch international confessed to having doubts about whether he would be able to play at the same level he once did. “I always had belief that I would play football again, but the uncertainty regarding recovery was very difficult,” he explained. “Whether I would return the same as I was, I thought about that.”
