German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has begun a three-day visit to Nigeria, from December 10 to 12, 2024, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations. His trip follows previous high-level exchanges between Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and German officials, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Nigeria in 2023 and President Tinubu’s visit to Germany.
Steinmeier’s agenda includes discussions with President Tinubu and ECOWAS President Dr. Alieu Omar Touray on topics such as regional stability, economic collaboration, and shared governance priorities. He is also accompanied by a delegation of German business leaders from sectors like IT, energy, and high-tech, signaling increased German interest in Nigeria as an investment hub.
In Lagos, Steinmeier will meet cultural icons like artist Dr. Nike Okundaye and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka. He will also explore the local startup ecosystem and urban development challenges in Lagos, highlighting the importance of cultural diplomacy alongside economic and political discussions.
