Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has downplayed his team’s chances of overcoming Real Madrid in their upcoming UEFA Champions League clash, admitting that City has only a “one per cent” chance of progressing.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Guardiola acknowledged the challenge posed by the Spanish giants, who have historically dominated the competition.
“If you ask me, I’d say we have just one per cent chance to get past Real Madrid. They are the kings of this tournament, and history has shown that they always find a way to win,” Guardiola stated.
Despite his cautious tone, Guardiola’s remarks could also be a psychological tactic to relieve pressure on his squad. Manchester City has faced Real Madrid multiple times in recent seasons, with both clubs producing thrilling encounters. Last season, City eliminated Madrid in the semi-finals before going on to win their first-ever Champions League title.
However, Guardiola remains wary of Madrid’s experience and resilience, particularly under manager Carlo Ancelotti. “It’s never easy against them. No matter how well you play, they have the mentality and individual brilliance to turn things around in a moment,” he added.
Manchester City will look to defend their title as they aim for back-to-back Champions League triumphs. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, the record 14-time winners, will seek revenge and another step toward reclaiming European dominance.
With both teams boasting world-class talent, the upcoming clash promises to be another high-stakes battle on the grandest stage of European football.
