Former England goalkeeper David James has expressed his belief that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made a mistake by selling Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez in 2020. Martínez, who joined Aston Villa for £20 million, has since flourished, particularly during Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign. James praised Martínez as a “monster” and a “big-game player” with the character and shot-stopping ability that Arsenal could still benefit from today. James argued that Martínez would be a perfect fit for Arsenal, especially given the current competition between goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya.
James’ views are echoed by legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who also believes that Martínez has proven Arsenal wrong by excelling at Aston Villa and helping elevate the club to Champions League status.
