In a detailed statement addressing criticisms directed at Peter Obi, an Obedient supporter has shared an impassioned defense of the former Anambra State governor, contrasting his achievements and approach to governance with those of other Nigerian leaders. According to the supporter, Obi’s critics often focus on tarnishing his image, grouping him among politicians responsible for corruption and poor governance. However, the Obedient argues that Peter Obi’s track record distinguishes him as a unique figure in Nigerian politics.
Drawing from various public acknowledgments, the Obedient highlights Obi’s tenure as a model of prudence and transparency. During his time as governor, Obi was recognized by Abraham Nwankwo, former Director General of the Debt Management Office, as the only governor who did not request permission to borrow funds, reflecting his stance against debt dependency. Further, Nigeria’s former Finance Minister awarded him the title of the “most prudent governor” for his responsible fiscal management. Under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) framework from 2000-2015, Obi led Anambra to the top position nationwide in both education and healthcare improvements, according to the supporter. Additionally, the Ministry of Works awarded him the top position for road network development, while the national poverty alleviation program under Magnus Kpakol acknowledged him as number one for addressing poverty in the state.
In addition to these domestic recognitions, the Obedient emphasizes Obi’s standing with international agencies, noting that he was the first governor to fully pay counterpart funds required by these organizations. Beyond his tenure, Obi’s legacy includes clearing pension and gratuity backlogs, refusing gubernatorial pensions, and initiating Nigeria’s first sub-national savings fund—leaving Anambra State with ₦75 billion in cash reserves, including $150 million in foreign currency.
Despite these achievements, Obi remains steadfast in his refusal of material benefits from his governorship. The supporter points out that he declined to sign the pension law for governors and has repeatedly claimed that Anambra State has neither bought him a bottle of water nor allocated him any land. Instead, Obi has devoted his time post-governorship to philanthropic work, regularly visiting schools, hospitals, and farms, while donating over ₦5 billion to educational institutions alone—funds that, as the supporter notes, could have been used to acquire properties in high-value areas like Abuja.
In the words of the Obedient, the real question is whether other leaders could replicate Obi’s legacy. How many past and current leaders, the supporter asks, have established similar records of substantial savings, prompt salary payments, responsible pension management, and ongoing support to education and health institutions? The Obedient urges Nigerians to look beyond rhetoric, challenging them to consider who among today’s leaders could be compared to Peter Obi in transparency, integrity, and ongoing dedication to public service.
The Obedient supporter concluded the statement with a hopeful message: “A new Nigeria is POssible!”
