Israeli airstrikes in Beirut on October 10, 2024, killed 22 people and injured over 100, as reported by Lebanese authorities. The strikes hit a densely populated area in central Beirut, an unusual target for Israeli forces, as they had typically focused on Hezbollah’s southern strongholds. Among those killed was a family of eight, including children. The main target of the attack was senior Hezbollah official Wafiq Safa, who narrowly escaped the assassination attempt. Safa plays a key role in coordinating with Lebanese security agencies and is a top figure within the organization.
The attack comes amid escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah, which intensified following Hezbollah’s support for Hamas in the Gaza conflict. Israel has been carrying out targeted strikes on Hezbollah leaders, including a previous strike that killed Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s former leader.
