Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has reiterated his resolve to continue demolishing illegal structures in Abuja despite mounting protests and criticism. Wike stated that the demolitions aim to restore order, protect public safety, and transform Abuja into a globally recognized city. He dismissed protests and accusations of insensitivity as attempts to derail the government’s efforts.
The minister emphasized that no compensation would be provided for illegal structures, particularly those built on green areas. He also highlighted security concerns, noting that shanties often harbor criminals. Wike announced plans to convert some demolished areas into organized facilities, like bus terminals, to promote better urban management.
Displaced residents, however, have pleaded for alternative housing, emphasizing the impact on over 10,000 individuals, including marginalized communities. Wike has invited community representatives to discuss potential solutions but remains firm on the policy against unauthorized developments.
