In Edo State, a female police inspector, Edith Uduma, was dismissed after exposing a sergeant accused of raping a 17-year-old female suspect in police custody. The dismissed officer discovered the crime, recorded it, and later shared the footage on social media. However, the Edo State Police Command accused her of attempting to extort the sergeant involved, allegedly demanding ₦1 million to cover up the case and collecting ₦45,000 initially. Her husband, also a police officer, was demoted for reportedly being involved in the extortion plan.
The sergeant accused of rape was also dismissed following an orderly room trial. While the police claimed Edith and her husband violated professional protocols, she denied the allegations of extortion and argued that she faced retaliation for publicizing the incident. Edith has called for justice, stating that civilians face even harsher treatment under similar circumstances.
