Abuja, Nigeria – The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Usra Hendra Harahap, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Nigeria.
A former staff member at the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja accused Ambassador Harahap of inappropriate physical conduct during an official meeting in February 2024. The alleged victim claims to have suffered psychological trauma, leading to a diagnosis of severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.
The complainant further alleges that she faced retaliatory actions, including termination and excessive scrutiny in her role at the embassy, following her decision to come forward with the accusations.
In response, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its commitment to addressing the allegations with transparency, pledging to follow all legal procedures. The Ministry has also emphasized its dedication to providing psychological support to the alleged victim while maintaining high ethical standards within its diplomatic missions.
Preventive measures, including guidelines to address sexual violence at diplomatic posts, have been in place since 2022. The Ministry has reiterated that any behavior contrary to diplomatic ethics will not be tolerated.
As the investigation continues, the Ministry has assured the public of its resolve to gather all necessary facts and ensure justice is served. The outcome of the inquiry remains highly anticipated by observers and stakeholders.
