The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive banning Nigerian police officers from engaging in arbitrary arrests, the detention of youths, and the collection or checking of mobile phones.
In a statement, Egbetokun emphasized that these practices violate citizens’ rights and tarnish the image of the Nigerian Police Force. He warned officers to desist from such actions or face strict disciplinary measures.
“Arbitrary arrests, unwarranted detentions, and the unauthorized checking of mobile phones are unlawful and will no longer be tolerated. The police must operate within the confines of the law and respect the fundamental rights of all Nigerians,” Egbetokun stated.
This directive follows widespread public complaints about harassment by police officers, particularly targeting young people under the guise of routine checks. The IGP also urged citizens to report any violations to appropriate authorities for immediate action.
The move has been widely praised by human rights organizations and the public as a step toward curbing police misconduct and rebuilding trust between the force and the people.
