Julius Abure, has issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), cautioning it against any attempt to forcibly occupy or invade the party’s national secretariat amidst the ongoing leadership crisis.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 25, 2025, Abure described any such move by the NLC as “illegal, provocative, and a clear breach of democratic norms,” warning that the party would resist all forms of intimidation and interference.
The warning comes amid escalating tensions between the party’s leadership and the NLC, which has openly questioned the legitimacy of Abure’s continued stay in office and called for a restructuring of the party’s national executive.
“The Labour Party is not a department under the Nigeria Labour Congress,” Abure declared. “We are a registered political party under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and no external body has the right to forcefully take over its affairs.”
Sources close to the party reveal that the LP secretariat has since been placed under tight security following reports of an alleged planned occupation by union officials loyal to the NLC leadership.
The crisis, which has split opinion among party members and supporters, continues to deepen as both camps maintain hardline positions. Political observers warn that unless urgent reconciliation efforts are undertaken, the infighting could jeopardize the party’s stability ahead of key electoral contests.
As of press time, the NLC has not officially responded to Abure’s warning. However, insiders suggest that a press briefing may be scheduled in the coming days to address the growing dispute.
