Alhaji Asari Dokubo, a prominent Niger Delta activist and former militant leader, recently revealed why he declined a pipeline surveillance contract offered by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Despite his longstanding commitment to tackling oil theft in the region, Dokubo cited deep concerns about the effectiveness and transparency of existing government measures, specifically regarding the persistent challenges of oil theft and regional insecurity.
Dokubo’s refusal has fueled discussions across the Niger Delta and among key stakeholders. He explained that his decision reflects his dissatisfaction with certain government policies, particularly the level of involvement of the Nigerian security forces. Dokubo questioned whether these policies genuinely aim to protect Nigeria’s oil infrastructure or merely serve other interests. According to Dokubo, he could only consider a contract that aligns with his vision of creating real, measurable impact in combating oil theft and ensuring a stable environment for the Niger Delta’s communities.
