The Lagos State Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) recently criticized the APC government, accusing it of lacking the will to implement the recommendations of the judicial panel on police brutality, particularly regarding the #EndSARS protests. This panel was set up to investigate claims of human rights abuses, including the controversial Lekki Toll Gate shootings in 2020. Critics, including human rights lawyers, have condemned the government for delaying action on the panel’s findings, despite earlier assurances of full implementation and transparency from the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
While some compensation was paid to victims of police brutality, many believe that the government’s slow or partial implementation undermines the panel’s goals of justice and accountability. These issues have fueled ongoing protests and criticism, especially as the panel’s conclusions were disputed by state officials who downplayed the scale of the violence.
