The National Economic Council (NEC) is considering implementing state policing as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s escalating security challenges. Sixteen governors have submitted reports endorsing the initiative, with recommendations for constitutional amendments to support its implementation. However, 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory are yet to make their submissions.
This proposal aligns with longstanding calls for decentralized policing to tackle issues like kidnapping, banditry, and other crimes that have overstretched the federal police force. The council plans to finalize its decision by 2025, pending broader consensus and legislative changes.
