The National Grid in Nigeria suffered a major setback on October 14, 2024, resulting in a widespread blackout across the country. The collapse occurred at around 6:18 p.m., leading to a drop in power generation from 3.87GW to zero by 7 p.m. Efforts to restore the grid began immediately, with about 90% of the country’s substations receiving power again by October 15. Areas like Abuja and other major distribution centers were among the first to have electricity restored, although some regions remained without power longer.
This was the sixth grid collapse in 2024, highlighting ongoing issues within the nation’s power infrastructure. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stated that a challenge during the restoration process caused a slight delay, but recovery efforts continued to ensure power availability to most substations. Investigations into the cause of this latest collapse are still underway.
