The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive mandating banks to deduct charges for USSD transactions directly from customers’ mobile airtime balances, rather than their bank accounts.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, is part of ongoing efforts to streamline payment processes and resolve longstanding disputes between telecom operators and financial institutions over USSD service charges.
With this move, users conducting banking transactions via USSD codes will now see deductions reflected in their airtime, similar to how they pay for regular calls or SMS.
The NCC assured the public that the decision was made in consultation with stakeholders and aims to ensure transparency, service continuity, and fair billing practices. However, the directive has already sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many expressing concern over potential double charges and reduced access for low-income users.
Further clarification from banks and telecom providers is expected in the coming days as implementation begins nationwide.
