Nigeria has increased surveillance at its entry points in response to concerns over newly identified COVID-19 variants circulating globally. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed that no cases of the new variants, such as EG.5 or BA.2.86 (descendants of Omicron), have been detected in the country. These variants are being closely monitored internationally due to their potential impact, although current assessments suggest they pose a low global risk.
In addition to surveillance, the NCDC is enhancing testing capabilities and genomic sequencing to monitor and identify any emerging strains locally. Citizens are advised to maintain good hygiene practices and remain calm, as COVID-19 is primarily a concern for high-risk groups like the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
