Nigeria is taking a significant step towards conducting a long-awaited national population census, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares to establish a committee to oversee the process.
The move signals the administration’s commitment to gathering accurate demographic data, which is crucial for national planning, economic development, and resource allocation. The last census in Nigeria was conducted in 2006, and efforts to hold a new one have faced multiple delays due to funding issues and political concerns.
A senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the committee will be tasked with setting timelines, ensuring transparency, and addressing logistical challenges that have hindered past attempts.
“The President understands the importance of credible data for governance. This committee will work with stakeholders to ensure a seamless process,” the source stated.
Experts have long called for an updated census, citing Nigeria’s rapidly growing population, which is estimated to be over 220 million. The lack of recent data has impacted policy formulation in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
The National Population Commission (NPC) had previously set plans in motion for a census in 2023, but it was postponed due to financial constraints and the general elections.
With President Tinubu’s administration pushing forward, Nigerians will be watching closely to see if this initiative finally leads to a successful headcount.
