The Federal Government of Nigeria has placed health authorities on high alert, initiating strict surveillance of passengers arriving from China due to a surge in respiratory infections in the East Asian nation.
This measure follows reports of increased cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus known to cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like issues to severe respiratory distress, particularly in children and older adults.
Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), confirmed the activation of enhanced monitoring protocols. “We are closely tracking developments in China and have implemented measures to screen and quarantine incoming passengers if necessary. Public health safety remains our top priority,” he stated.
Travelers from China are being subjected to thorough health screenings at entry points, and authorities have advised against non-essential travel to affected areas until the situation stabilizes.
The NCDC is urging Nigerians to maintain preventive measures, including frequent hand washing, wearing masks in crowded settings, and observing social distancing. Citizens are also encouraged to report symptoms such as fever, cough, or breathing difficulties to health authorities promptly.
The Federal Ministry of Health has assured the public that it is closely coordinating with international health agencies to manage any potential risks. Updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
This proactive response highlights Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding public health amid global health concerns.
