In a groundbreaking move to enhance skill development among students, the Nigerian government has introduced 15 new subjects to the basic education curriculum. The new additions include practical subjects such as Makeup, POP (Plaster of Paris) Installation, and Plumbing, aimed at equipping students with entrepreneurial and technical skills from an early age.
The curriculum reform, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Education, is designed to address the skills gap in the country and prepare students for diverse career opportunities. Other subjects introduced include tailoring, hairdressing, ICT, and other vocational courses tailored to meet the demands of the evolving job market.
Speaking on the development, the Minister of Education stated, “This expansion of the curriculum is part of our commitment to creating a more robust and practical education system. By introducing these skills-based subjects, we are empowering students with tools they can use for self-reliance and national development.”
The new curriculum will be implemented in public and private schools nationwide, with provisions for teacher training and resources to support the transition. Education experts and stakeholders have applauded the initiative, noting its potential to reduce unemployment and promote entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths.
