The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for an indefinite strike starting December 1, 2024, in states where the new ₦70,000 minimum wage is not implemented. This decision follows a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Port Harcourt. The NLC criticized several state governments for failing to comply with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and described this inaction as a violation of workers’ rights and dignity.
States like Zamfara, which recently began implementing the previous ₦30,000 minimum wage, and Osun, still negotiating a new model, are among those lagging in implementation. The NLC also demands federal interventions to alleviate poverty and address the high cost of living, including fair petrol pricing and enhanced social protections.
