EzeiloProfessor Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, a distinguished law professor and former United Nations Special Rapporteur, has made a serious allegation against the Nigeria Police Force, claiming that they now charge up to N300,000 for certain services that should be free or low-cost.
Speaking at a public forum, Ezeilo highlighted this troubling development as an example of how the police have become increasingly commercialized, monetizing basic services in ways that undermine justice and public trust.Ezeilo pointed out that such actions not only erode the integrity of the police force but also worsen the security challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians, particularly those who cannot afford these steep fees.
She criticized the politicization and unprofessionalism within the security sector, arguing that police corruption and inefficiency contribute significantly to the insecurity plaguing the country. As a respected advocate for human rights and good governance, Ezeilo called for immediate reforms to tackle these issues. She emphasized that the police should focus on their core responsibilities of providing safety and security to all Nigerians, regardless of economic status, and restore public confidence by eliminating these illegal practices.
