Abuja, January 11, 2025 – Nigeria’s national power grid reportedly suffered its first collapse of the year on Thursday, leading to widespread power outages across the country. The incident, which marks the 13th recorded collapse in the past 13 months, has once again raised concerns about the stability of the nation’s power infrastructure.
According to reports, power generation plummeted from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2:00 PM to a critically low 390.20 MW by 3:00 PM. Efforts to restore electricity began swiftly, with power generation recorded at 302 MW by 2:40 PM, signaling gradual progress toward recovery.
However, conflicting statements have emerged regarding the authenticity of the collapse reports. The X (formerly Twitter) account @NationalGridNg, a platform recognized for providing real-time updates on Nigeria’s power grid, dismissed the claims as false. A statement posted on the account read, “KINDLY IGNORE RUMOUR OF A GRID COLLAPSE TODAY. IT IS FALSE!”
As of now, neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) nor the Federal Ministry of Power has issued an official statement to confirm or refute the reports.
Nigerians are advised to remain patient as the authorities work to clarify the situation and address the power disruptions being experienced in many parts of the country.
