ABUJA — The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has reportedly directed all affiliated unions and members of the Congress to mobilise for the immediate takeover of Labour Party offices across the country.
This move follows the recent Supreme Court judgment that sacked Julius Abure as National Chairman of the party and recognised the internal party leadership restructuring spearheaded by the NLC-backed caretaker committee.
Ajaero, in a strongly worded directive, emphasized that the Labour Party belongs to the Nigerian workers and can no longer be hijacked by individuals who, according to him, are acting against the founding principles of the party.
“The time has come for workers to reclaim what rightfully belongs to them. The Labour Party was formed by the working class, and it must return to its original owners — Nigerian workers,” Ajaero declared.
He accused the sacked leadership of corruption, authoritarianism, and attempts to manipulate court rulings to cling to power.
Already, reports from several states including Lagos, Edo, and Abia indicate that local NLC chapters have begun peaceful takeovers of LP secretariats, with assurances that the process will remain orderly and without violence.
The NLC has urged security agencies to support the workers’ efforts and not allow any illegal elements to obstruct the lawful restructuring of the party’s leadership.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party caretaker committee has thrown its full support behind the NLC’s mobilisation, calling it a “rescue mission” to reposition the party ahead of 2027.
