Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has continued his legal action against Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda and other lawmakers despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to mediate the ongoing leadership crisis.
The dispute began on January 13, 2025, when 35 lawmakers voted to impeach Obasa over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement, appointing Meranda as the new Speaker. Obasa rejected the impeachment, describing it as unconstitutional, and subsequently filed a lawsuit to challenge his removal.
In March, President Tinubu intervened by holding a reconciliation meeting with Obasa, Meranda, and other lawmakers in an attempt to resolve the conflict. During the meeting, Tinubu reportedly urged Obasa to withdraw his lawsuit and encouraged all parties to work together. However, Obasa’s legal counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), has confirmed that the Speaker remains firm in pursuing the case, dismissing any speculation about its withdrawal.
Amid the ongoing political tension, the Lagos State House of Assembly has directed its staff and legislative aides to work remotely indefinitely as a precautionary measure. Acting Clerk Babatunde Ottun issued the directive, citing concerns over potential unrest within the Assembly premises.
The crisis continues to unfold as political stakeholders monitor developments within the Lagos legislative body.
