Mr. Peter Obi, has accused the federal government of weaponizing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a bid to frustrate and destabilize the Labour Party.
Speaking during a press interaction on Monday, Obi alleged that INEC, which is constitutionally mandated to operate as an independent and impartial electoral body, is being manipulated to serve political interests hostile to the growth and stability of opposition parties — particularly the Labour Party.
“It is unfortunate that an institution like INEC, which should be a symbol of democracy and neutrality, is now being used as a tool to stifle democratic opposition,” Obi said. “What we are witnessing is not just interference, but an attempt to weaken the will of Nigerians who are demanding change through the Labour Party.”
Obi’s remarks come amid rising tensions within the party and ongoing disputes over the legitimacy of its leadership. Recent moves by INEC, including its stance on internal party matters and recognition of certain factions, have sparked widespread controversy and allegations of bias.
He warned that such political interference in democratic institutions sets a dangerous precedent and erodes public trust in the electoral process. “The independence of INEC must be protected at all costs. If Nigerians cannot trust the body responsible for conducting elections, then our democracy is in grave danger,” he added.
The federal government and INEC have yet to respond to Obi’s allegations. However, political observers note that the accusations may further intensify calls for comprehensive electoral reforms and heightened scrutiny of the commission’s conduct.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful democratic engagement and urged supporters of the Labour Party to remain vigilant, united, and law-abiding as they continue the struggle for a more just and accountable Nigeria.
