Peter Obi has raised concerns over Nigeria’s political landscape, criticizing what he described as “frivolities” consuming national discourse while poverty and insecurity deepen.
In a strongly worded statement, Obi said:
“Too much attention on frivolities as poverty deepens is concerning. It is deeply troubling that Nigeria’s political leadership is rapidly descending into an embarrassing spectacle.”
He lamented that despite Nigeria facing record levels of poverty, rising infant mortality, millions of out-of-school children, and severe insecurity, political leaders remain distracted by trivial issues.
“One would expect our leaders to be focusing and sacrificing solely on providing urgent, transformative solutions,” Obi stated. “Instead, the national discourse is consumed by trivialities, whether it is allegations of sexual harassment or budget padding in the National Assembly, controversies surrounding State Houses of Assembly speakership, or reckless court judgments threatening to destabilize states.”
Obi criticized all three arms of government—the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary—for failing to address the country’s pressing challenges. He cited recent events in Osun and Rivers states, calling them “disgusting and uninspiring”, and warned against undue interference in sub-national governance.
He further condemned political defections and the “reckless neglect of governance,” stating that the nation cannot afford to be run like a “reality TV show” while citizens suffer.
“This mockery of leadership is not only unacceptable, it is a betrayal of the people’s trust,” Obi asserted.
Reiterating his call for leadership rooted in character, competence, and compassion, he concluded:
“A new Nigeria is POssible!”
