Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has officially launched his presence on TikTok, aiming to engage a broader audience and promote his vision for a “New Nigeria.”
Announcing his new venture on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi stated: “This is my official and only TikTok page. Kindly join me in building a New Nigeria that is POssible. – PO.”
Within hours of the announcement, Obi’s TikTok account garnered significant attention. As of this report, his page has attracted over 21,000 followers, with his introductory video amassing thousands of views and interactions.
This move follows closely on the heels of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent TikTok debut. El-Rufai, who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 elections, amassed over 200,000 followers within 24 hours. He expressed intentions to use the platform to share his political perspectives and party activities.
Obi’s entry into TikTok underscores a growing trend among Nigerian politicians leveraging social media platforms to connect with younger demographics. By embracing TikTok, known for its vast Gen Z and millennial user base, Obi aims to foster discussions around his political vision and engage supporters in innovative ways.
Supporters and political observers alike have lauded this initiative, viewing it as a strategic move to bridge the gap between traditional political discourse and contemporary digital engagement.
As Nigerian politicians increasingly turn to platforms like TikTok, the landscape of political communication continues to evolve, reflecting the importance of digital channels in shaping public opinion and mobilizing support.
