In a heartfelt tribute, Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), lauding his indelible contribution to Nigeria’s democracy. Obi praised Nwosu as a “true democrat” who courageously upheld democratic values during his tenure, particularly during the pivotal 1993 presidential election.
Obi’s statement highlights the contrast between Nwosu’s commitment to electoral integrity, even under military rule, and the challenges facing modern Nigerian elections. He lamented that, despite today’s access to advanced technology and increased funding, Nigeria has struggled to maintain the standard of transparency and truth that Nwosu exemplified.
“Prof. Nwosu stood for the truth, even when it was dangerous to do so,” Obi reflected, emphasizing the need for more leaders like Nwosu, who would risk their lives for the sake of democracy.
Closing his tribute, Obi prayed for Nwosu’s soul and called on Nigerians to work towards a new democratic era, concluding with his rallying cry: “A new Nigeria is indeed POssible.”
