Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concerns over threats directed at him, his family, and associates following the release of his New Year message. The politician stated that his remarks have drawn significant backlash, including allegations from Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing him of “crossing the line” and warning of potential consequences.
Obi, in a statement released via his social media platforms, called for clarity on the specific actions or statements deemed offensive. “If I have truly crossed the line, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum,” he said. Despite the criticisms, he maintained his stance, emphasizing his commitment to truth and decorum in addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
In his original message, Obi highlighted concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, warning of an alleged drift toward authoritarianism and suppression of free speech. “We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed,” he stated.
The former governor also shared a link to his New Year message on YouTube, encouraging those who had not watched it to do so and form their opinions. He reiterated his determination to advocate for a freer and more democratic society, stating, “May God help us create a better and freer society for the sake of our children.”
Obi’s response underscores the escalating tension between political actors and concerns about the safety of dissenting voices in Nigeria. His remarks have sparked a broader debate on the state of free speech and democracy in the country.
As of press time, Felix Morka has not issued a follow-up statement clarifying his remarks or addressing Obi’s concerns.
