Peter Obi has delivered a scathing critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue State, calling it a “fanfare in the face of tragedy” and a clear reflection of a nation losing its soul.
In a powerful statement, Obi condemned the President’s appearance and the tone of the visit, describing it as “a campaign-style display rather than a solemn act of national compassion”, despite the mass killings in Benue, which have reportedly claimed over 200 innocent lives.
> “What has happened to our compassion as a people?” Obi asked. “We pleaded that the President visit in the spirit of deep national mourning. But what we saw was agbada and celebration, not reflection and empathy.”
Obi lamented the use of state resources for organizing parades, closing schools, and staging dances for the President, instead of offering tangible support to victims. He decried the disturbing trend of turning condolence visits into media spectacles, rather than moments of reflection and action.
> “Condolence visits have become carnivals. Lives have been lost, yet we’re clapping and singing like it’s a rally. That is not leadership. That is a betrayal,” Obi added.
He concluded by warning that a nation that celebrates in times of sorrow risks losing its soul, reiterating his belief that “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
