The House of Representatives has called on the United States government to reinstate the five-year multiple entry visa policy for Nigerian citizens, citing concerns over the potential damage to long-standing diplomatic and economic ties between both countries.
In a resolution passed during plenary, lawmakers expressed disappointment over the continued restriction of Nigerian applicants to shorter visa durations, describing the move as “discriminatory and counterproductive.” They noted that American citizens still enjoy extended visa privileges when visiting Nigeria.
The motion, sponsored by Hon. Umar Shehu, emphasized that the former five-year multiple visa policy enhanced trade, tourism, education, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and the United States. He warned that continued limitation could erode goodwill and strain bilateral relations that span decades.
The House urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to engage its U.S. counterpart through diplomatic channels, with a view to securing a reversal of the current policy.
The lawmakers also encouraged the Nigerian government to consider reciprocal measures if discussions fail to yield results.
