In Owerri, the capital of Imo State, residents have largely complied with the sit-at-home order imposed by pro-Biafra leader Simon Ekpa, amid threats of violent reprisals for those who disobey. Ekpa, who is based in Finland, has been issuing sit-at-home orders to push for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He has used his platform to threaten severe consequences against anyone daring to ignore the directive.
These sit-at-home orders, which have been enforced through violence and fear, have created significant disruptions in the southeastern region of Nigeria. Markets, schools, and businesses remain closed as residents choose to stay indoors, fearing attacks from armed enforcers of the order. Recently, Ekpa’s supporters were linked to a violent incident where gunmen attacked parts of Imo State, burning a popular market and indiscriminately shooting in public spaces, deepening the atmosphere of fear.
This isn’t the first time Ekpa has used threats to impose his orders. In previous statements, he promised to “deal with” those who refuse to comply, leaving many residents with little choice but to obey, despite the heavy toll on their livelihoods. Security forces have been deployed in parts of Imo to maintain peace, but the threat of violence continues to loom large over the region.
The state government and security agencies have condemned the violence and vowed to protect law-abiding citizens, but many residents remain hesitant to return to normal activities, fearing that the situation could escalate further.
