Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the Senate’s unwavering support for the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas (LGAs). This endorsement follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that grants local governments more financial independence, a decision seen as crucial for enhancing grassroots governance across the country
For years, local governments in Nigeria have struggled under the centralized control of state governments, which often restrict their access to funds. This lack of financial independence has stunted the ability of LGAs to provide essential services and infrastructure development to their communities. The ruling, along with the Senate’s backing, aims to address this by ensuring that local governments can directly access federal allocations without interference from state governments.
