The Senate has advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to halt the ongoing demolition exercises in Abuja due to the hardships imposed on displaced residents. Senators raised concerns about the humanitarian and economic impacts of the demolitions, urging a more compassionate approach.
Despite protests and criticism, Wike has defended the demolitions as necessary to restore Abuja’s master plan and address security threats posed by illegal settlements, such as those along the rail corridor. He emphasized that such structures often house unidentified individuals, posing risks to public safety. However, he has invited representatives of displaced communities to discuss possible support and resettlement options.
