Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, and her husband, Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan, have threatened legal action against the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, over alleged defamatory remarks made during a televised interview.
In a letter dated March 27, 2025, the couple’s legal representatives accused Nwaebonyi of making false and damaging statements during an interview on News Central TV, which was also aired on various platforms including DSTV, GOTV, and Startimes. The statements allegedly suggested that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had a history of making false claims of sexual harassment and implied that her marriage to Uduaghan was not based on mutual consent.
The couple argued that the remarks had caused significant reputational damage, leading to embarrassment and distrust among their political and business associates. They have demanded a public apology from Nwaebonyi within 14 days, to be aired on News Central TV and shared across social media platforms. Failure to comply, they warned, would result in legal proceedings.
This development follows Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent submission of an affidavit to the Senate Ethics Committee as part of her petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. As of now, Senator Nwaebonyi has not publicly responded to the allegations or the demand for an apology.
