Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima recently criticized Kemi Badenoch, the UK Conservative Party leader, accusing her of denigrating Nigeria in her comments. Speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue in Abuja, Shettima expressed disappointment, referencing Badenoch’s previous remarks about Nigerian politicians misusing public funds. He stated that Badenoch’s criticisms of Nigeria, despite her Nigerian heritage, do not diminish the country’s global significance, noting Nigeria’s potential as a major global player by 2050.
This follows broader controversies surrounding Badenoch, including her perceived dismissive comments about Nigeria and her defense of British colonialism. Attempts by Nigeria’s Diaspora Commission to engage with Badenoch were reportedly ignored, leading to further debates about identity and allegiance among individuals of Nigerian descent abroad.
